Philip Archer OBE: Looking out from Leith
Looking out from Leith is an exhibition that takes inspiration from Philip Archer's 30 years of working and painting in the area. Leith is visually rich and stimulating with exciting and sudden juxtapositions of old and new. Archer explores these themes, his work a drama of colour and light, shadows and feints, reflections and glimpses, of people at work or in contemplation, exploring the borders of the material and the transcendent.
The area of Leith, situated in Edinburgh, is visually rich and stimulating, with exciting and sudden juxtapositions of old and new; the colour and scale of the docks, a busy and colourful Saturday Market, every kind of restaurant and café, an art school, a vertical distillery, and the youthful energy that has transformed the area in recent years and inspired many wonderful makers, artists and craftspeople.
Archer's new work explores many of these theme - his studio looking out on to one of Leith's busiest streets - the large studio window providing a simple formal device, bringing together the inner world of the artist and the outer world of the here and now.
Philip Archer was born and brought up in Cardiff. He started his studies in Art Foundation at Cardiff College of Art and went on to complete a BA in Sheffield College of Art and MA in The Royal College of Art, London. He later moved to Scotland where he was Principal at Leith School of Art from 1991 - 2019. Philip was awarded an OBE in the 2021 New Year Honours list for services to art and education.
