Sarah Carrington: Coastal Light
"So often we find ourselves drawn to nature, to the coast, the sea, its rhythm and its power. The coast offers a solace and retreat from the bustle and noise of the human world. A sea sanctuary."
Sarah graduated in 1999 from the University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh College of Art with an MA(Hons) in Fine Art. Following a hugely successful sell-out degree show, she began as a full-time artist working in Edinburgh, creating landscape paintings and drawings. Since then, her work has been exhibited widely throughout the UK, and she has carried out numerous private and public commissions.
In 2009 she moved to the north coast of Ireland, where as a landscape painter the beauty of the area constantly inspires and challenges her work. She enjoys exploring and experiencing the dramatic coastline in all seasons and weathers, which she expresses through paint and mixed media techniques in her paintings. Sarah believes that significance of place plays an important part in our lives and that by portraying certain views and vistas of the beautiful scenery, resonance can be brought to many.
Sarah regularly facilitates art workshops with students in cross-community local secondary schools, based on landscape and painting techniques, both in a studio setting as well as outdoors within the landscape. In addition, she conducts painting demonstrations and artist talks in arts venues and educational settings. She also facilitates painting workshops for adults and community groups in the local area, valuing the connection between people and place.
Coastal Light is a collection of new paintings by Sarah, focusing on the ever-changing light experienced at the shoreline, locally for her on the Causeway coast, as well as at her favoured Scottish Isle of Iona, and further afield, on the Algarve coastline. She paints using emulsion, oil, ink and a variety of mixed media, often incorporating gold leaf.
