Audrey Rapier : Between Land and Light
Audrey Rapier was born in Scotland and grew up in a village on the west coast of Cumbria. After a Foundation course at Carlisle, she studied Fine art painting at the Central School of Art and Design in London (BA Hons, 1st class, 1981). After graduating she settled in North London and for many years, worked in the applied arts mainly as a scenic artist and later as a web designer, both for the BBC.
Returning to painting full time in 2019, Audrey is motivated by her emotional response when viewing a potential subject. She works mainly in oils, but also loves the immediacy of pencil and watercolour sketches. She is inspired by line and form, working with shapes, colours and the effects of light. Her work is intimate and quietly observational, capturing everyday moments with a calm simplicity. Her paintings exude a meditative quality, focusing on the unexpected beauty in the everyday or the seemingly ordinary.
