Jayne Stokes : Recollection
Jayne Stokes is essentially a landscape painter but not in a traditional sense. Working in a range of mediums and incorporating found objects into her paintings, her aim is to explore and document our relationship with the environment.
The starting point for most of her pieces is a journey. This could be a short walk, a car journey or a trip further afield. The old tins, matchboxes and ceramic fragments she integrates into the paintings often have a history of their own, having been on a journey themselves after time spent in someone's pocket, on a shelf or in the sea.
These objects are used as tools to select the figures and buildings, to set them apart from their surroundings or provide a different perspective - often functioning like a magnifying glass.
'Recollection' is a new body of work inspired by the landscapes Jayne has encountered over the last year, pieced together from the fragments, photographs, found objects and old maps that she collected and accumulated throughout the passing months.
Jayne Stokes studied Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art and has exhibited nationally. She is a professional member of the Society of Scottish Artists.
