The gallery is delighted to be holding its first solo exhibition of the winner of the Open Eye Gallery Exhibition Award, Audrey Grant. Presented at the Society of Scottish Artists in 2016, the award entitled Grant to a solo exhibition at the gallery. The upcoming exhibition, Ceci est mon corps, comprises a new body of work arising from Grant's collaboration with Scottish Ballet.
Described as 'a talent to watch' by critic Duncan Macmillan, Grant has found stimulus for the exhibition in her privileged across to Scottish Ballet's rehearsals. In the rehearsals Grant focused on trying to capture something of the energy and shape of the movement, looking at the dancers and not her drawings, building up networks of marks that would take the shape of recognisable bodies and movements. Some of these sketchbooks will be on display as part of the exhibition. Taking inspiration from these drawings, Grant has created a new series of paintings focusing on the powerful and moving ballet premiered in Scotland at the 2016 Edinburgh International Festival - MC 14/22 (Ceci est mon corps), choreography by Angelin Preljocaj and Christopher Hampson’s lyrical Cinderella first seen here in 2015.
Grant has exhibited in the prestigious Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (2016) and regularly has work selected for the Royal Scottish Academy and the Visual Arts Scotland Open Exhibitions. She is a professional member of Visual Arts Scotland and is based at WASPS artist studios, Patriothall, Edinburgh.
The exhibition will be on show 12 - 29 May 2017.
