About the artist - Deborah Cumming

Deborah Cumming PhD is an Edinburgh based artist. Her work focuses on bringing a new twist to still life painting. Inspired by the simple kitchen scenes of the late 16th century Spanish painter Francisco de Zurbaran, Deborah has simplified her still life compositions to include mainly fabric and flora. Fabrics are sourced for their pattern, textural qualities, colour combinations and historical references and generally complimented by a single flower stem or seed head. Deborah’s distinctive style is easily recognised as influenced by her background in design, textiles and botanical illustration. Her undergraduate studies in art and design started in Chicago, New York and Edinburgh. A Master of Design degree from Glasgow School of Art was then complimented by a fully funded doctorial degree in design theory from Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen. As a design practitioner and teacher for a number of years, her passion is now painting. Deborah is a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy Open Exhibition in Edinburgh as well as a number of exhibitions throughout the UK. Her work also belongs to private collectors in the UK, USA, Germany and Canada.
